Chinnara Thangudhama Transit Home for children

Prajna runs Chinnara Thangudhama, a Transit Home for Urban Education Deprived Children, who have run away from homes, destitute and abandoned children, children rescued from child labour, children who are found on the street begging and children of migrant families who are in need of care and protection.
The ultimate aim of this programme is to mainstream them in formal schools through a specially designed motivational training. Additionally,
Children are provided with shelter, good food, clothing, medical care and supplementary education. Caring for every single girl, it is also a priority for Prajna to offer the girls security, love, community, comfort, emotional counselling, empowerment, support in cultural and sport activities as well as free time and playing activities.
Family orientation is an important ambition of Prajna, which is why the children can have regular visits from their parents and also stay with them for the holidays, if possible.
Since December 2011, 470 children (216 boys and 254 girls) have been re- schooled and mainstreamed. In 2022 there was a change in concept, which made the Transit Home a shelter for girls only. Right now there are 24 girls between 6 and 12 years old staying at Chinnara Thangudhama.
